The different culture between US and China

                                                                                                                     Freya
When I was a young girl in China, I always thought that everyone was the same, no matter what country they are from. All those thoughts are changed when I grew up. I finally found these two countries have a lot of difference. I grew up in China, but I am studying in the US now. Everything is fresh for me. Since I came to US,I have found many differences in the festivals, food and the weather.

As for the festivals, because China and the US have the different cultures, they are different. Actually, there are two calendars in China, one is the perpetual calendar, and all Chinese people always use this to celebrate festivals, like our traditional festival---the Spring Festival. So, in China, the New Year is usually the end of January or early February. Soon is Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional festival in China, Chinese people always eat moon cake, have dragon boat racing, and a big dinner with family. In contrast, Americans only have one calendar, and set the New Year on January 1.Of course, there also many traditional festivals. For example, Americans have Halloween that China doesn’t have. People will dress up, in order to drive away the spirits; it’s very interesting because you can see a lot of people who has different costumes walk in the street.

Another obvious difference is the food. In China, they divided the land into 36 provinces, and among them are the eight cuisines. For example, Sichuan province is famous for spicy foods and Shanghai is famous for sweet food. In China, their staple food is rice and noodles, and the noodles are not like spaghetti. Chinese food also includes dumplings. In China, although they have some cold foods, Chinese people like hot foods more, especially hot water. In the US, it seems like people prefer fast food like hamburgers, sandwiches, and pizza. Another important thing is that Americans like the cold food, and they seldom drink hot water. In China, although they have some cold foods, Chinese people like hot foods more, especially hot water.

In addition, the weather is extremely different. It seems like the winter is pretty colder than China. China is divided into 2 parts, south and north. The weather in the south is always warm, even in the winter, the coldest time, and the temperature never goes under 0 degrees therefore there is no snow in the south. But things are different in the US, American also divided into 2 parts, both of this two part's temperature are immediately reduced just after summer. Even in south of America. the winter is more cold than south of China. It snows every year in the US, no matter in north or south of American and the temperature almost goes under the 20 degrees.

In general, there are a lot of differences between the US and China, especially for the festivals, food and weather. It’s very interesting to learn about the different cultures, which make us get more knowledge. In my opinion, no matter in China or the US, different countries have their own culture, they all are unique.

  1. Freya,
When I was a little girl, I thought if I dug a hole deep enough, I would reach China! But then I took science class and realized that the center of the Earth is fire and it's impossible to dig a hole from the US to China! Anyway, I like your comparison here, especially about the culture. I hope you are enjoying your time abroad!
