My basketball life

Jimmy Hong

When I was in grade eight, I saw a lot of people play basketball on the court. At the moment I thought this sport was awesome because a lot of attractive girls were watching them play and I liked because it is a competitive sport. I had never played it before, so I started to practice every day.
First, I was not so good, people always outcast me because I was bad. I felt frustrated because they doesn’t want to play with me. While they were playing, I worked twice as hard as others so I could improve. I always challenged the person who was better than me. After three months, obviously I improved a lot. I could able to compete with people who are athletic, and sometimes I beat them in the game.
One day, while I was taking and break, the basketball coach came to talk to me. He wanted me to play for the team because I was fast. From that moment I knew my hard working was all worth it. Every day at 4:30 I would practice alone. Whenever I had time I watched YouTube to see how people competed in the NBA.
Finally, I became one of the starting five players. I felt so happy and unbelievable! I was not so good at offense, so I put a lot of pressure on defense. After one year I was one of the key players and we had undefeated seasons. Even now, I still remember how happy we were from that time period, and how proud I felt after I had been through all this hard work.
Right now I realize the idiom “no pain no gain”. I learned a lot of principles from basketball. If you want to be good at something, just focus on it. The process is more important than the success. Never give up, and never back down.
